About Bolsterstone

Bolsterstone is a hilltop village, about 1.000 feet above sea level, situated about 8 miles North west of Sheffield, Yorkshire. It has Anglo Saxon roots and lies on a Salt Route between Cheshire and Yorkshire. The village stocks, constructed to accommodate 3 people can still be seen against the church wall. The tall stone pillar has an iron ring to which a felon would be attached for whipping.
In the churchyard there are two Bolster Stones. Archaeologists believe that the twin mortice holes, in the top stone, might have supported Anglo Saxon crosses. Another school of thopught believes they may have supported a gibbet.
St. Mary's Church, standing on the site of an earlier Chapel of Ease, was completed in 1879. The Lych Gate followed 20 years later to commemmorate Queen Victoria's Jubilee. A sycamore tree, standing between The church and the Castle Inn was also planted to commemmorate that event.
Castle Cottage, believed to be the oldest standing building in the village, once belonged to the Earl of Shrewsbury. The house might have been part of a fortified manor house, known at the time as Bolsterstone Castle.
The village is also very proud to be the home of Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir. They have been world champions, and still sing copncerts at home in foreign lands.
